Course Objectives:

This course will discuss the technologies and architectures used to build serious enterprise-level applications.  Specific topics will include:

  • Designing multi-tiered architectures
  • The relationships between containers, components, and services
  • Object-relational mapping mechanisms
  • Component architectures like Enterprise JavaBeans
  • Asynchronous communication with message queues
  • Integration strategies, including service oriented architectures
  • The influence of XML web services

  • Participate in classroom and WebCT discussions
  • Midterm Exam
  • Take the final exam or do a final project 
Grading:
  • Class and discussion board participation
  • Midterm exam
  • Final Project

Participation:

Most weeks questions will be posted to the discussion boards.  You should both respond with your own answer (a couple of paragraphs is fine) and reply to your fellow classmates.

Final Project:

Students are offered the following choices:

  1. Build applications based on the course topics (see me for approval -- just try to incorporate examples of the technologies covered in class)
  2. Write short papers on approved topics

Academic Integrity:
