Student Responsibilities
Students participating in the 22nd Annual Computer Science Conference
are required to complete each of the following items to successfully fulfill
the CIS Seminar Requirement:
-
Students must attend six of seven Friday night presentations 6:00-7:30
p.m., 9/9, 10/21, 11/18, 12/16, 1/20, 2/17 and 3/17. The student may miss
one presentation for any reason, without explanation.
-
Each student must attend and present a paper at the 22nd Annual Computer
Science Conference to be held at Rensselaer at Hartford on Saturday, April
22, 2006. The Conference will take all day.
-
Each student must meet the following "milestones" in preparing his/her
paper:
-
Submit a Proposal
(electronically) in the prescribed format.
Due Date: October 28, 2005
-
Submit electronically an Extended
Outline and Annotated Reference List in the suggested format.
Due Date: January 20, 2006
-
Reconcile the scope and content of your paper with your Session Leader
by February 7, 2006. If requested, submit a preliminary draft of your paper
to your Session Leader.
-
Submit your Final Paper with Abstract, in manuscript form, to your Session
Leader (electronically).
Due Date: February 17, 2006
Final paper manuscript form: Double Space, 20-24 pages, approx. 4000
words, with all figures, tables, and cited references.
-
Submit your Paper in electronic "Camera-ready" format for publication in the Conference
Proceedings. Exact detailed instructions and format specifications will
be distributed at a later date.
Due Date: March 31, 2006 - 7:00 p.m. electronically to Florence Josephs.
Absolutely No Exceptions!
-
Present your paper at the 22nd Annual Computer Science Conference on Saturday,
April 22, 2005. You will be assigned a 20 minute time slot for your
presentation and any Q&A.
Any student who does not comply with the above responsibilities will not
satisfy their CIS Seminar Requirement.
All students are expected to abide by the code of ethical behavior as
described in the section on Academic Honesty in the current Rensselaer
at Hartford catalog or handbook.
Violations will be dealt with using the strongest available measures -
up to and including retroactive revocation of the Master's degree.
Additional Notes:
-
Proposals submitted by the due date (10/28) will be returned on or before
11/18 insofar as possible. You will have a chance to rewrite and resubmit
your proposal if necessary. However, if you do not have an approved proposal
by the end of the Fall semester, we strongly recommend that you withdraw
from the course.
Failure to do so could result in a failing grade for the course.
-
If your Proposal has been accepted and you do not withdraw from Seminar
before the end of the Fall Semester, you have indicated your intent to
complete all of the Seminar responsibilities by the due dates given.
Failure to do so could result in a failing grade for the course.
-
Your papers are highly visible artifacts. Their content must be of high
quality and must be carried out to correspondingly high standards in order
to warrant publication.
-
You must find your own topic. It is unlikely that CIS faculty have "ready-made"
topics to hand out. However, talking over your ideas with faculty may be
beneficial.
-
Previous Computer Science Conference Proceedings are available to you in
the Rensselaer at Hartford library. You may wish to review these proceedings
as a guide. However, if you propose a topic similar to any previous CIS
Seminar paper, you will have to show significant value added to have it
approved.
-
Do not expect your Session Leader to write or rewrite your paper for you.
You must submit a publishable/scholarly work or it will not be published.
The final paper due on February 14, 2005 must be your best work and not
a draft version. (Beta-test your paper on others well before this due date!)
-
Prepare all deliverables in accordance with the requirements and suggestions
in this handout. For your final, camera-ready copy, detailed instructions
and a sample page will be distributed next semester. For that camera-ready
copy, you will need to use desktop publishing software, or at least a fairly
sophisticated word processor. You must be able to produce a PDF file for your final submission.
At Rensselaer at Hartford, MS-Word is available on the PC's.
